Mini-FAKRA Shrinks the RF Footprint

Per-vehicle antenna counts rise—satellite navigation, telematics, V2X, keyless entry and several camera feeds all pull RF links—yet package space does not. Mini-FAKRA answers by shrinking the FAKRA connector footprint to roughly a third and ganging two or four ports into one shielded housing, pushing usable bandwidth toward 20 GHz. Through 2026 the two families coexist instead of replacing each other: legacy tuner modules hold the color-coded classic interface, while zonal and camera designs specify the modular version from the start. The modular FAKRA connector retains 50 ohm impedance and keyed housings that block mis-mating under vibration, so the win is real estate and port density rather than new RF math.

HSD and Automotive Ethernet Split the Roadmap

Autonomous systems generate several terabytes of sensor data per hour, and the HSD connector carries that load across LVDS camera, display and radar links at 100 ohm differential impedance. Standard HSD still serves USB and Ethernet runs, while miniaturized high-data-rate variants lift frequency and bandwidth for 4K surround cameras and central compute. At the same time automotive Ethernet at 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 runs over a single twisted pair, halving conductor count and cutting harness mass, and multi-gigabit variants cover the camera and radar bandwidth that once justified a shielded quad.

Pick the interface by the link it must carry, not by habit. For RF antenna and high-resolution camera feeds, a FAKRA connector or its Mini-FAKRA module stays the practical choice; for LVDS, USB and Ethernet data, HSD and twisted-pair automotive Ethernet take the new programs. Confirm impedance, coding and sealing before sign-off, and share your link budget with a connector partner who supplies automotive-volume programs. The in-vehicle network rewrites its own rules—specify for the build it will actually face.
